It's time to prepare your car for winter

Everything you need to know about getting your car prepared for all the winter weather could throw at it - from engine freeze up to frozen doors and windscreens - and how we can help you.

Here at Proficio, we have expertise in car care. Looking after your car is not only about keeping it looking its best (although we can help you here too!), it's also about making sure you do everything you can to keep it running safely. There's no more important time to ensure that than in the harsh weather conditions of winter.

There are not many worse feelings than driving your car in dirty wintry conditions and you try to clear your screen, only to discover your jets are frozen. Then the wipers just smeer the grime across your windscreen and visibility gets worse and worse. Then, panic sets in because you can no longer see out of your windscreen.

It's an awful feeling - but this, and other winter predicaments are easily avoided with some planning and preparation. In this simple guide, we will explain how, with assistance from our products, we can help you can ensure your car is winter ready and you won't find yourself in dangerous situations whilst driving.

Step 1: Check your coolant levels

In winter, temperatures can regularly drop below freezing so its imperative you check to make sure your car has the correct coolant/anti-freeze levels. Engine coolant not only protects your engine from siezing up or freezing, it also contains anti-corrosive additives to keep your entire engine in good shape. We stock both red and blue anti-freeze, in concentrate and Ready to Use.

Step 2: Top up your screenwash

No one wants a dirty windscreen that they can't clear quickly and easily, so an absolute must for winter driving is a topped up windscreen washer reservoir. This simple task takes seconds to do and will ensure you have complete visibility - whatever the weather conditions throw at you. Keep a bottle in your boot too for emergencies. Our Ready to Use Screenwash works down to -5ºC and our concentrated formula works rapidly to melt frost and ice down to -20ºC - ensuring no frozen jets when you start to drive your car on very cold mornings.

Step 3: Check your wiper blades

It's extremely important to make sure your wiper blades are performing at their best in winter. They need to be able to clear your screen without leaving smears. Run your finger along the rubber on the blade and if you feel any lumps or bumps then they need replaced. If they feel smooth and but are smearing then you can clean them with a cloth soaked in screenwash.

Step 4: Protect your car's exterior

Regular washing of your car is a must in winter to ensure your windows have maximum visibility but also to protect your exterior from the corrosive effects of road grit. Our Wash & Wax not only gives a superb clean but leaves a protective layer of wax which repels water and grime.

Step 5: Think ahead to prevent freezing

When your car has been sitting all day in icy conditions and you need to get moving quickly, look no further than our fast-acting de-icer. So, if you need to swiftly remove ice or snow from your car, then our De-Icer will come to the rescue! It is formulated to rapidly remove frost and ice from windows and locks. The fast acting, concentrated solution not only effectively defrosts but also helps prevent freezing down to -30ºC. Repeated use prevents re-freezing, so your car stays frost-free for longer. So, think ahead and make sure you have a ready to use spray bottle in your car for those times you need to de-frost fast.
